Spring Tornadoes – March 6, 2012

 Red Cross workers continue to offer shelter, food, emotional support and relief supplies to the thousands of people affected by last week’s tornadoes.

·         Shelters are open to provide people with a safe place to stay and Red Cross emergency vehicles are delivering meals throughout affected communities. Relief supplies like shovels, rakes, trash bags, work gloves and tarps are being handed out to help people clean-up their neighborhoods.

·         Red Cross mental health workers are helping people cope with the devastating things they have had to endure. Health workers are helping replace things like lost medications and eyeglasses.

·         In the coming days, Red Cross caseworkers will be meeting one-one-one with disaster victims to provide access to resources and tools to support the recovery process, and the means to help replace essential items like clothing and household goods.

·         In just the past week, more than 500 trained Red Cross disaster workers have:

  • o   Sheltered hundreds of people displaced by tornadoes across 11 states;

  • o   Served more than 42,000 meals and snacks; and

  • o   Handed out nearly 14,000 relief items.
